Wall Hanger

The Basics of Home Decor

The phrase "wall hanger" refers to any piece of home decor, whether functional or purely aesthetic in nature, which can be hung on a wall. A functional example could include a television, a stereo system, or a landline phone base. An example of an aesthetic wall hanger could be a poster, a hanging plant, or a prized object such as a decorative sword. Combining both form and function are useful decorations such as a house number plaque, a clock, or a calendar.

Wall hangers are one of the most basic facets of home decoration. Bare walls appear "naked"; they lend the room an air of sparseness and emptiness. While some people prefer to leave their walls bare, the majority of the population enjoys hanging art, plants, or even household appliances designed to be wall-mounted. By keeping the floor open and using the walls to hold decorative or functional objects, one can trick our innate spatial awareness into perceiving the room as being larger than it actually is.

Indoor and Outdoor Wall Hangers

Most decor hung on walls is placed inside the home, but there are a few specific exceptions. The personalized house sign, for example, is ordinarily placed outside, next to the front door and above the doorbell, if there is one. A house number plaque can also be placed just inside the home, in the foyer or entryway, especially if it is very ornate and deserving of close attention. A house number plaque doesn't look out of place in the kitchen either, but you might want to have one house number plaque for indoors and another for outside the home.

Other decorative plaques evoking the outdoors should be placed strategically on an outside wall; if you have a bird or squirrel feeder, decorative plaques with those images would be appropriate for placing outdoors near the feeders. The same general aesthetic applies to gardens, although flower and garden-oriented decorations are also appropriate for the kitchen.

Hanging plants can be placed inside or outside, depending on the size. Many people choose to hang a basket of nasturtiums or petunias beside the door, either opposite the front door lamp (if there is one) or directly above the house number sign. The bright flowers and trailing leaves offer a cheerful welcome to visitors. Hanging plants with a great deal of trailing foliage will obscure the house number plaque and are better placed in the living room or kitchen. Many people neglect to decorate the outside of their homes beyond a simple custom house number plaque (and some don't even do that), but the outside is the first impression guests and visitors will get. Creating a pleasant "face" for your home makes guests and passersby pay attention and feel uplifted. Having a clearly visible house number plaque will also help visitors and delivery people notice and remember your address.

Decorating Your Home for Mass Appeal

When planning your home decor, you should keep in mind what sort of image you want to convey to guests and visitors. The decorations you choose will give everyone who visits your home an idea of who you are and what you esteem as attractive and interesting. Hunters, for example, frequently display mounted and taxidermized animals, prized guns, or art related to animals in nature. Someone who loves gardening might choose hanging plants and art related to gardens or the wilderness. A proud homeowner or an architect might choose to hang pictures of homes they find beautiful, their own home sign, or the plans for the house itself. However you choose to decorate your home, wall hangings are the perfect way to help visitors feel at ease and interested in you and their surroundings.
