Single-sided

Putting Your Best Face Forward

'Single-sided' means the object in question is only printed on one side, the other side being left blank. In most cases, unless otherwise specified, most printed material suitable for hanging in or around the home - such as a poster, an art print, or a home sign - is single-sided.

In the case of double-sided home decor, the homeowner is forced to make a choice. Some double-sided home decor is conditional; take, for example, a home sign for the bathroom door. You can purchase a bathroom door home sign that indicates whether the room is occupied or empty. In a busy household, this can be very valuable.

Single or Double?

Home decor designed for the outdoors, such as a home sign constructed from metal, stone, or ceramic, is mostly single-sided. This enables the home sign to be hung on a tree or on the front of the home. A house sign intended for the yard, however, is generally better served by printing on both sides, so that people approaching from either side can read it.

Indoor, the majority of decor is probably single-sided. The exception is the home sign and youth decorations, such as posters. A double-sided home sign on the bathroom door, as mentioned above, can be very useful. Rooms with a dual purpose (for example, a guest bedroom that also serves as a study) can benefit from a double-sided home sign announcing when it is okay to use the room, and a double-sided home sign for the bedroom door is prized by teens living at home, concerned for their privacy.

Choose Your Side

The main difficulty with double-sided printing is deciding which face to expose. In the case of a home sign, the sign changes every time the condition within the room changes, so it's essentially a user-based decision; but in the case of posters and other double-sided decorations, the choice is purely an aesthetic one. This can be difficult for indecisive homeowners, faced with the task of choosing a "favorite" or determining which image has the greater appeal.

However, because almost all home decorative printing is single-sided, this isn't an issue you're likely to face anytime soon. A double-sided home sign or two can help prevent embarrassment and maintain privacy in your home, but if you plan to hang the home sign outdoors, it would be best to use a single-sided home sign rather than a double-sided one. Additionally, ensuring your home sign is properly secured to your home or another structure is important to its functionality as an effective sign.

Announcement vs. Assistance

A single-sided custom home sign is most likely announcement-oriented, such as an address plaque or a simple "welcome" sign to your guests. Double-sided home signs are more dynamic, offering assistance or guidance by being flexible in their application. Each type of home sign is designed with a specific purpose in mind, and that purpose should be considered when deciding which personalized home sign to purchase.
