Bedroom Sign

Personalizing Your Private Space

A bedroom sign is a home sign specifically made to designate whose bedroom is whose, or which door leads into the bedroom. They are much more common to designate children's rooms than adult's, but fashionable and attractive versions of both variants of home sign are popular and fairly common.

The design of this type of home sign is often more personal than other home signs. While bedroom signs are still important guides for guests, they are used primarily among the household - either to enhance a sense of ownership over a particular space in the home or to keep children from invading one another's space.

The Importance of Home Signs in Families

Just about every child has, at some point, designed and hung a personalized home sign on their door. Whether the home sign in question said "Stay Out!" or announced the room as belonging to them, it was an important declaration: this is my personal space; I am claiming ownership of it.

In houses with multiple children, having a bedroom home sign for each child or each room can become a necessity. These home signs can be used to remind children in which room they must go to sleep, in which room their toys belong, or from which room they need to stay out. Particularly with younger children, these can be important educational and organizational tools, helping them to recognize the importance of obeying signs - even a house number sign.

A Child's Home Sign

The design of a home sign for children is significantly different than those created for adults. While adults might choose relaxing or peaceful motifs to designate which bedroom is theirs, children often mix an assortment of their interests together - things that excite or intrigue them - upon which to base the design of their home sign.

Right now, pop stars and Disney icons figure largely in the design of bedroom signs for young girls, while home signs designed for boys still consist mostly of race cars, dinosaurs, and astronauts. Pirates are becoming a common theme for both genders, as are ninjas and vampires (among slightly older children). You can expect a teen to either remove their home sign entirely or replace it with a much less descriptive home sign, one that perhaps strikes them as being more mature, but not as "lame" as the one you would choose.

The bedroom sign is one home sign not specifically created for the convenience of your guests. In a home with children, allowing them to customize a home sign for their bedroom door can be an important step in learning concepts of ownership, individuality, and personal space.
