Fixing Points
Where You Hang Your House Signs
"Fixing points" are simply the spots at which your home decor, such as house signs and paintings, are attached to your home. Indoor or outdoor walls and doors are the most common fixing points a house has to offer.
Where you choose to hang your house signs and other home decor depends on the material they're made from and the impression you wish to make. A person who loves the outdoors - a gardener, for example - might boast a colorful and well-decorated lawn, while an introvert might focus their energies on making their home's interior as beautiful as possible.
Choosing the Right Spot
Finding the perfect place for your home decor is a precise and personal decision. Some people agonize over it for days or weeks before making up their minds; others pick the nearest empty space and take it, then might move it around for a month or two before deciding it looks "right".
Generally speaking, any objects or art designed for outdoor use should be placed outdoors. While it's not unusual to see house signs indoors, guests might raise eyebrows at indoors plastic flamingoes or garden gnomes. Of course, it's your home, so the decision is entirely yours.
Multi-Purpose Home Decor
While most objects of home decor have a clear-cut place and purpose, there are some that blur the line. House number signs, for example, can be placed indoors or out. House signs can be customized with any message, and thus are equally well-suited to announcing the home's name and address as well as informing guests which door leads to the restroom. House signs can be crafted of hardy weather-resistant materials, or made from unfinished wood and kept indoors. Because of their highly customizable nature, house signs are one of the most flexible home decor objects on today's market.
Other decorative accents almost as adaptable as house signs include watering cans (used as planters), clay dishes (used as planters, candleholders, or even candy dishes), and small statues or figurines. Generally, if the statuette is holding a bowl or vase, it's more appropriate for outdoor use, where it can be used as a bird bath or bird feeder; but even these can be brought inside to accent your home.
Typical fixing points for house number plaques include outdoors, beside the front door; beside the back door; and displayed in the living room or parlor of the home. Home signs with information other than the house name and number are often used to help direct guests through the house, as well.
The best way to decide where to place a picture or other piece of home decor is by examining the area and trying to reduce it down to lines and curves. Lines that are parallel or perpendicular to one another are pleasing, especially if they're balanced and form an overall shape (four rectangular frames arranged in a square, for example, or in a straight line). Circular shapes can be used to break up areas dominated by angular shapes; circular mirrors, paintings, and even photographs containing curves can all help achieve this effect.
